Blackberry vs. Hosted GMail
Listen here, RIM… There are quite a few of us out here that use Google’s “For Your Domain” for email, and we want the same 2-way sync that regular GMail users have through the Blackberry Internet Service email. So GET IT TOGETHER!
If the BIS can configure itself just because I enter an email address with ‘@gmail.com’ at the end, then why can’t I just get a checkbox that says ‘This is a Google Hosted email account’ next to which I can enter my Google Hosted address? The POP and SMTP servers are the same, the ports are the same…
Everything’s the same, just MAKE IT WORK!

You misspelled “I talked her into.”

Baseball
Baseball games are entirely too long…
I’m thinking that a good old 4-fouls-and-you’re-out rule may be in order for the majors. I’m sure we’d see games shortened by at least a half hour each, and then the game would be back to the “national pastime” instead of the national snooze-fest.
SPF records to protect your email
Another thing that no-ip lets me set up is an SPF record. An SPF record is a text record that resides on your nameserver whose purpose is to give specific mail-sending authority to servers that you specify. The aim of the SPF record is to prevent unauthorized parties (spammers) from saying that they’re you in an email. Learn more about SPF and create your SPF record at OpenSPF.
NX - NoMachine - !M - (whatever)
use NX, from NoMachine, it rocks…
i know, i know… you’re saying ‘but all i need is remote X like cygwin or a vnc connection’
i was saying the same thing until i tried NX with ubuntu…
you’ll need to install the server, client, and node packages from nomachine and make sure that youve got the sshd package installed, then open up port 22 on your router…
youll access the NX desktop via NX client (installed into windows or another linux box), and the connection works with tunnelling over ssh so all is safe and secure.
NX client comes pre-configured to launch GNOME or KDE sessions, and its customizeable enough to launch any other window manager.
if you happen to be running xubuntu (ubuntu with the lightweight window manager xfce), then use startxfce4 as your startup command…
enjoy!
hosted gmail bouncing (on purpose)
tip for those with hosted gmail (google apps for your domain) if you want to produce bouncebacks for email sent to non-existent accounts:
- add an account for catchall (catchall@example.com)
- set catchall@example.com to be the catch-all account for your domain
- suspend the catchall account
now, all mail sent to a non-existent user @example.com will bounce back to the sender.
have fun!

check out OpenDNS…
they provide DNS servers as an alternative to you ISPs DNS servers, which can sometimes be a little wonky at times…
