Someone (great app, pay the $5 for the ad-less version) asked me if there were any tricks to upgrading a Verizon BlackBerry Storm (9530) to the latest leaked OS, and this is what I came up with:

No tricks, but some stuff to keep in mind:

Google's GMail app will not work, but the GMail-BB plugin works.

some 3rd party themes will not work

do a 3rd party app backup before you upgrade (use BBSAK for this, it's the easiest way)

there are still a few glitches that need to be ironed out, but nothing that affects functionality

if you use BerryBuzz, you'll no longer have repeating audio notifications even if you use their new beta version.

I first did an upgrade (when the OS first leaked, you had to install 191 onto your desktop and then unzip the 230 files over it). The upgrade went well.

The second time around I did a wipe / full install (again, BBSAK is great for this) because the full 230 installer leak dropped. If you use Google Sync or Google Maps, you'll have to load the .cod files from your 3rd party app backup because the m.google.com site won't let you install Sync, and it'll give you the wrong version of Maps.

Now that the IM clients, Facebook, AppWorld, and now BBM have been updated to OS 5, you should be good to go.

I also had a problem with AppWorld, where it seemed to think I was in Europe (not just showing me prices in Euros, but giving me Europe-specific app listings). Weird fix: I had to remove the installed AppWorld, remove my SIM card, and re-download AppWorld. I haven't checked out what happens if I put the SIM back in (I think I was getting redirected to a different download because the SIM was present, but not really sure).

Good luck!

One of the newer (and most useful in my opinion) features is the ability to select multiple files and attach them to an email right from the app. The only way to do this natively in the BlackBerry OS is to create an email and then attach each file one-by-one until you're finished.

Here's the tip:

In order to use that new cool multiple file-select goodness on your Storm, you'll need to bring up the keyboard via the BB menu, and hit space on each file you want to select. When you're finished, you can use the menu commands to zip, copy, or email the files you've selected.

If you try it and like it, donate to Matthias, like I did.
